The direct d3 approach asks the knight to decide immediately. White accepts doubled pawns, then builds a compact centre with Nf3 and c4.
- Challenge e4 before committing the queen
- Use the b-pawn to strengthen the centre
- Block the bishop check with development
Watch out
- The c-pawns are useful only if they advance actively
- Watch the ...Bb4+ check before moving the dark-squared bishop
